The ECS-3 high-speed, hand-held rotating eddy current scanner and scanner system was designed for ease of use and interpretation. Set-up is quick and easy. A full C-scan image displays the scanned surface in color or gray-scale, mirroring the surface and subsurface, to provide ease of interpretation and reduce the chance of interpretive error. The scanner system consists of the ECS-3 scanner, US-454A EddyView laptop, and ECS-3 imaging software. The system provides real-time imaging of diverse conductive metals clearly showing surface and subsurface material conditions and discontinuities.

Sliding Probes are used on airframes structures for finding surface or subsurface flaws located near or between fasteners. Sliding probes are specifically designed to inspect rows of fasteners. They operate in reflection mode and are used to find surface and near-surface flaws.

U-40 Encircling Coil
Encircling Coils are typically used for on-line inspection of tubes, bars and wires for manufacturing flaws such as inclusions, porosity, cracks, laps, seams, etc.

Jet Engine Semi-Automated Eddy Current Scanning System
The ETC-2000 jet engine EC scanning system, developed under the auspices of the ETC (Engine Titanium Consortium), is a semi-automated system for scanning fracture-critical jet engine components. The scanner was developed to work with most jet engine OEM components requiring highly critical eddy current testing.
ES-1000 Jet Engine Tabletop ECT Scanner
In response to customer interest in a lower-cost, limited-feature, eddy current testing system for jet engine components weighing up to 30 pounds, NDT innovator, UniWest, has developed a new tabletop, 3-axis, semi-automatic ECT inspection system. The ES-1000 provides precision eddy current testing for rotationally symmetric parts, such as engine disk bores and webs.
The new unit enables substantial capacity utilization efficiencies for global OEMs at the same time it places semi-automated eddy current testing within the financial reach of smaller regional jet engine maintenance facilities.
For large organizations, including aircraft manufacturers and global aircraft maintenance facilities, many of whom already own one or more full-scale ETC-2000 systems, the ES-1000’s modular design allows sharing of existing components, such as probes, part-mounts, and signal processing instruments as well as computers and monitors, between eddy current testing systems. All of UniWest’s eddy current instrument series, such as the US-454, US-454A and the new EddyView Pro and Premium can be used with the ES-1000. In addition to equipment acquisition cost-efficiencies, component sharing allows larger organizations to allocate their eddy current testing workload across all UniWest ECT resources.
For regional facilities servicing smaller jet aircraft, the ES-1000’s acquisition cost makes investing in a semi-automated eddy current system a viable business proposition when compared to a full-scale system.
The modular ES-1000 system comprises four operationally independent components: 1) turntable and gantry module; 2) eddy current generation and processing instrument; 3) eddy current probe, and 4) computer and display, running Windows 7 or higher.
The systems’ essential component is the 24-inch-square turntable which is fully compatible with all UniWest mounting mechanisms. The turntable and extendable gantry accepts parts up to 30 inches in diameter and 12 inches tall. For inspection of larger parts, custom gantry and probe-arm configurations can be readily fabricated.
The turntable module’s 32-inch-wide gantry rail and attached probe arm are fitted with servo-driven lead screws for horizontal and vertical placement of the probe. Any of UniWest’s full complement of more than 3,000 eddy current probes may be attached to the probe arm by means of appropriate holders.
System setup is a simple matter of placing a part on the turntable, positioning the probe-head at the scan initiation point and pressing the software start button. The system then automatically scans the part using a pre-programmable routine.
In addition to the obvious cost efficiencies associated with component interchangeability, the ES-1000 is subject to less downtime because components are easily swappable from one system to another. For instance, while an instrument is out of service for factory calibration, or when a hard drive or video monitor fails, the problem can be quickly remedied by simply replacing the out-of-service component, reinstalling the ES-1000 software, if necessary, and rebooting the system.
Although the ES-1000 system is not designed for multi-dimensional motion at this time, minor contour following is afforded by spring compliance of the probes. UniWest anticipates the future development of software upgrades to accommodate inspection of curvilinear parts such as turbine fins.
The ES-1000 provides essentially the same precision as UniWest's full-featured ETC-2000 jet engine scanning system, with a reduced number of more complex performance features, for about a quarter the cost of the larger system. This new, value-optimized system is ideal for both original equipment manufacturers for whom work allocation and capacity utilization are important, as well as for regional maintenance facilities for whom, until now, larger ECT systems have been prohibitively expensive.
Uni-Versal Robotic Eddy Current Test Machine
The Uni-Versal™ Test Machine is revolutionizing the way products are quality tested in the automotive industry. It is the first flexible test platform that offers totally robotic testing of metal bearings and spindles utilizing eddy current testing (ECT) for cracks. It is also the first machine of its kind to offer true automatic self-calibration.
The Uni-Versal™ Test Machine was designed to meet the current need for automated, reliable product quality verification of metal bearings and spindles safety-critical automotive parts. The Uni-Versal™ speeds up the verification process with no interruption of flow. It also eliminates the possibility of operator error or misreading of results. True auto-calibration ensures consistently accurate readings.
Central to this machine is the UniWest US-525M multi-channel eddy current testing instrument.
The Uni-Versal™ and has a compact footprint (37" deep × 44" long) and can be installed inline or along side an existing conveyor belt. It can be programmed to handle and test avariety of spindles and bearings.
The operator simply selects the part number, a three-dimensional image of the part appears on the screen, and the Uni-Versal™ automatically resets the gain for that part. One robotic arm then lifts the part from the conveyer and brings it into the test machine where it is placed on a rotating chuck. Another robotic arm manipulates the eddy current probe, while ensuring that it remains precisely the same distance from the part's surface to ensure accuracy. Separate probes robotically test inside and outside diameters for flaws.
The Uni-Versal™ Test Machine segregates rejected parts from verified parts. An optional impact marker can then mark the accepted parts. Verified arts are then returned to the line, so there is no disruption to product flow. Rejected parts are placed onto another conveyor. Parts are divided into zones to identify flaw locations.

The Quick Change Transducer (QCT) series of transducers that makes changing wedge angle and transducer frequency rapid and easy, saving both time and money. The QCT connects straight into the wedges allowing for many combinations all within one kit. All QC Transducers are fitted with top mounted microdot connectors allowing for seamless transition from one transducer to the next. Angle Beam Potted
Angle beam transducers are single element shear wave transducers in a non-marring plastic housing. The high sensitivity and good resolution of these transducers allow them to be widely used and make them a popular choice for many NDT applications. They are found in diverse applications in industries employing NDT such as weld inspection and flaw detection on air frames and other such applications. Custom designs available upon request.
Replacable delay line pencil type transducers feature a single element and rugged construction for tough working conditions providing years of service. The compact design allows for the ability to access hard to reach areas or curved surfaces such as turbine blades. With high sensitivity and excellent resolution, these transducers have wide variety of applications, making them a popular choice for various inspections. Replaceable tips are available in .070" and .125" tip diameter.
Single element longitudinal wave transducers are used for flaw detection, material thickness measurements and feature mapping. The Standard Contact configurations use a rugged stainless steel housing coupled with an aluminum oxide wear face. - EDM Notching
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is an integral part of UniWest’s machining capabilities. UniWest has now added two new machines, as well as doubling the size of the machine shop. The new CNC controlled machines have been modified to hold large jet engine components (up to 40” diameter), allowing UniWest to handle even the most challenging parts. Electrically discharge machined notches, in a variety of sizes, shapes and locations, can be placed in almost all metals. The width of the notch can be tightly held and gives a fair representation of cracks typically found in the field. Calibration of eddy current measurement systems is an important factor for attaining the accuracy and precision of measurements required for quantitative nondestructive evaluation. UniWest’s unique and sophisticated EDM skills are called upon to do custom EDM work that others cannot perform. UniWest can CNC and EDM notch specific primary or master reference standard with all needed documentation; or notch customer supplied material for your special application UniWest builds both custom and generic reference standards for all your Ultrasonic and Eddy Current testing needs.
