  • Basic radiation physics
  • Radiographic equipment
  • Radiation units and dose limits
  • Biological effects of radiation
  • Radiation detection and measurement
  • Principles of Protection against Radiation
  • Shielding calculations for radiation protection
  • Personal dosimetry
  • Radiation monitoring
  • Storage of radiation sources
  • Accidents and hazards in perspective
  • Normative documents
  • Emergency procedures

Responsibilities of Basic Radiation Safety:

Upon completion of the BRS course, candidates will have gained a thorough understanding of basic radiation safety principles. The responsibilities associated with Basic Radiation Safety include:

a) Understanding the basic concepts of ionizing radiations.

b) Familiarity with the terminology used in radiation protection.

c) Awareness of the main requirements of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999, the Approved Code of Practice, and associated guidance notes.

d) Understanding the potential hazards (health effects) associated with the use of ionizing radiation.

e) Understanding the principles of practical protection to minimize exposure to ionizing radiation.

f) Knowledge of good working practices to keep radiation doses as low as reasonably practicable for site and compound radiography.

g) Ability to calculate source intensity and dose rates and understanding of the inverse square law.

h) Awareness of appropriate actions to take in emergencies.

Training & Exam Duration:

  • The BR's training duration is 16 hours. Candidates will participate in structured classroom training to gain a thorough understanding of basic radiation safety practices. The examination duration may vary based on the specific requirements and assessment process.
