Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) - PCN/SNT Level 1 & 2
Course Overview:
The Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) Level 1 and 2 training course provides comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for magnetic particle testing. Participants will learn to inspect welds, castings, and forgings made of ferromagnetic materials using magnetic media to detect surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities.
Duration: Level 1 and Level 2 (Direct Entry) – 5 days
Course Objectives:
By completing the Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) Level 1 and/or Level 2 training course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the basic principles of MPI.
- Apply MPI techniques to inspect welds, castings, and forgings using various magnetizing methods.
- Write clear and concise inspection procedures and test reports.
- Meet the syllabus requirements for Level 1 or Level 2, including both training and examinations.
Course Content:
The Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) Level 1 and/or Level 2 training course covers the following topics:
- Principles of MPI
- Testing procedures
- Detectability of defects
- Product technology
- Interpretation and reporting (Level 2 only, including interpretation to an acceptable standard)
- Control and maintenance checks
Prerequisites:
To achieve Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) Level 1 or Level 2 certification, the minimum required duration of training is as follows:
- Level 1: 16 hours
- Level 2: 24 hours (or a combination of Level 1 and Level 2 hours totaling 40 hours for Direct Entry)
- Please note that employer-based schemes may have different duration requirements based on experience and limited qualifications specific to the products being tested.
Additionally, the minimum duration of work experience for MPI Level 1 and/or Level 2 certification is as follows:
- NDT Level 1: 1 month based on a minimum of 160 hours per month or by scheme requirements
- NDT Level 2: An additional 3 months (a total of 4 months when combined with Level 1 experience) at a minimum of 160 hours per calendar month
- It is important to note that while the examination can be taken before or after completing the required work experience, a 'Certificate of Examination' or 'Certificate of Qualification' will only be issued upon providing proof of experience.
After completing and passing the examination, a 'results notice' will be issued by the approved Examination Centre, pending scheme requirements. This notice does not serve as a certification of qualification. Candidates may be given up to 24 months to complete the required work experience, with documented 'on-the-job' experience endorsed, before a 'Certificate of Qualification' is issued by BINDT/PCN for ISO9712 certification or by the candidate's employer for their specific scheme.
