Magnetic Particle Inspection Essentials:

Magnetic Particle Inspection is a pivotal technique employed for the detection of surface and near-surface flaws within ferromagnetic materials. Primarily utilized for crack detection, MPI stands as one of the most prevalent nondestructive testing (NDT) methods. The process involves magnetizing the specimen either locally or overall. In sound materials, the magnetic flux remains predominantly within the material. Conversely, the presence of a surface-breaking flaw distorts the magnetic field, causing local magnetic flux leakage around the flaw. This leakage flux becomes evident by applying fine iron particles, either dry or suspended in liquid, onto the surface. These particles accumulate at regions of flux leakage, creating visible build-ups that highlight crack openings, even if they are extremely narrow. Consequently, a crack is depicted as a line of iron powder particles on the surface.

Magnetization Methodology:

Effective magnetization entails generating a magnetic field with lines of force at a substantial angle to the anticipated direction of the cracks under detection. It's standard practice to apply magnetization multiple times in diverse directions. For instance, using magnetism in mutually perpendicular directions, such as at right angles, enhances crack visibility. Various methods, including changing field direction during magnetization, are also available for optimizing the process.
