What will I learn
Visual Testing - Level II
Visual Testing (VT) is a versatile nondestructive testing method that encompasses both direct and indirect visual inspection techniques. Direct inspection involves visually examining materials without additional aids, while indirect inspection may involve the use of tools such as magnifying glasses, mirrors, borescopes, or closed-circuit TV systems. Visual inspection plays a crucial role in identifying visible defects, problem areas, and anomalies, making it an essential technique in the NDT industry. Conducting visual examinations can effectively identify issues such as leaks, excess vibration, corrosion, or misalignment in operational plants, providing valuable insights for further NDT applications.
Course Content:
The Visual Testing Level II course builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in Level I. The course content includes:
- Definitions and terminology relevant to Visual Testing
- Vision and the Importance of visual acuity in Inspections
- Lighting techniques and their impact on visual examinations
- Environmental factors influencing visual assessments
- Direct and indirect methods of visual inspection
- Visual inspection equipment selection and usage
- Surface conditions and their significance in visual examination
- Inspection and testing criteria for defect identification
- Reporting and documentation practices for visual tests
- Application of written instructions for Visual Testing
- Relevant codes, standards, and industry guidelines
- Preparation of written Visual Testing instructions
- Product technology considerations for welds, castings, wrought materials, and secondary process defects
- Inspection of in-service components and identification of common issues
Responsibilities of Certified Level II:
An individual certified to Visual Testing Level II has demonstrated competence to perform NDT inspections according to established procedures. Within the defined scope of their certification, Level II personnel may be authorized by their employer to:
- Select the appropriate Visual Testing technique for a given testing method
- Define the limitations of the testing method's application
- Translate Visual Testing codes, standards, specifications, and procedures into instructions tailored to specific working conditions
- Set up and verify Visual Testing equipment settings
- Perform and supervise Visual tests effectively
- Interpret and evaluate results based on applicable standards, codes, and specifications
- Prepare written Visual Testing instructions
- Carry out and supervise all tasks at or below Level II
- Provide guidance and mentorship to personnel at or below Level II
- Report the results of Visual tests accurately
Training & Exam Duration:
- Visual Testing Level II training requires 24 hours of instruction for candidates who already hold a Level I certification. For candidates seeking direct Level II certification without prior Level I, 40 hours of training are required. Additionally, candidates with prior Level I certification must complete an additional 24 hours of training as per SNT-TC-1A guidelines. The examination requirements will be provided upon request.
Work Experience Requirement:
- To achieve PCN Level II certification in Visual Testing, candidates must have a minimum of 3 months of supervised work experience in VT for those who already hold a Level I certification. For candidates seeking direct Level II certification without prior Level I, a minimum of 4 months of supervised work experience is required. These work experience requirements ensure that Level II practitioners have practical exposure and hands-on experience in performing visual inspections in real-world scenarios. Please note that work experience should align with a nominal 40-hour workweek or the legal week of work.
- Note: Visual Testing Level II certification provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform visual inspections, interpret results, and report findings accurately. This course expands upon the foundational concepts covered in Level I and enables inspectors to take on more responsibilities in the NDT field. Visual inspection remains a cost-effective and valuable method for identifying visible defects and problem areas, making it an integral part of the overall NDT process
