The American Petroleum Institute (API) has donated access to its industry standards for best practices to Pennsylvania College of Technology. These standards will be integrated into various academic programs within the college’s School of Engineering Technologies, particularly benefiting students in welding and non-destructive testing.
Representatives from API, including Scott Garten, vice president of global industry standards product management, formally presented the donation at Penn College’s welding lab on Aug. 28. Accepting on behalf of the college were Bradley M. Webb, dean of engineering technologies, and Michael R. Allen, instructor and department head of welding.
The standards will primarily serve the welding and fabrication engineering technology, welding technology, and non-destructive testing programs, providing students with critical industry knowledge and practical skills in equipment design and construction for the oil and natural gas industry.
"Having access to API’s official standards will offer our students a competitive edge in the job market," said Webb, emphasizing the value of exposing students to real-world requirements and procedures.
API’s donation aligns with its mission to support the energy sector’s future workforce. "We’re proud to equip students with the training they need to advance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the oil and gas industry," Garten said.
The event included a tour of the college’s labs and centres, attended by API representatives, local political figures, and industry partners.
