For the first time since its inauguration in 2009, the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) is set to undergo a comprehensive underwater inspection. This groundbreaking initiative will utilize advanced submersible remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), marking a significant technological leap in the maintenance of the 4.7-kilometer-long structure, which has been a critical transport link for millions of commuters in Mumbai.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has sanctioned a budget of ₹7 crore for the detailed assessment, which is scheduled to commence post-January 25. The six-month-long project will employ state-of-the-art ROVs equipped with high-definition cameras to capture detailed footage of the submerged sections, allowing for the detection of potential cracks or structural vulnerabilities.

A Major Leap in Inspection Methodology

This marks a departure from traditional scuba diver-led inspections. While divers will still play an integral role in clearing marine growth from the bridge’s foundations to ensure visibility for the ROVs, the deployment of advanced technology signals a modernization in infrastructure maintenance.

An MSRDC official emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This new approach is key to safeguarding the health and safety of the Sea Link.” The official highlighted how the integration of modern technology will provide an unparalleled level of insight into the structure's condition, enabling the timely resolution of any potential issues.

Comprehensive Assessment of 179 Piers

The inspection will focus on the sea link’s 179 foundation piers, employing various methods such as non-destructive testing and scour surveys to ensure a thorough evaluation. The ROVs, supported by expert divers, will ensure a meticulous examination of the maritime structure, which has been a critical element of Mumbai's infrastructure for over a decade.

This initiative underscores MSRDC's commitment to the longevity and safety of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, a structure that has become a symbol of Mumbai’s modern engineering prowess. The use of advanced inspection technology reflects a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure management, ensuring the continued reliability of this vital transportation artery.
