Dexon Technology, a global leader in pipeline inspection solutions, has successfully executed a custom-engineered inspection solution for two challenging 12-inch subsea pipelines. These pipelines, which transport jet fuel and diesel from an onshore pumping station to an offshore sea berth, are critical to international fuel logistics. With tight shipping schedules and high downtime costs, Dexon was tasked with delivering an expedited yet precise inspection to ensure operational continuity.

The inspection project, which required rapid execution without compromising on quality, involved the deployment of a bidirectional run—a solution designed to minimize both downtime and costs. However, this approach posed unique challenges, demanding customized technology and engineering ingenuity to meet the client’s specific requirements.

Addressing Complex Challenges with Innovation

The bidirectional inspection approach, while beneficial in reducing operational delays, required two significant adjustments. First, Dexon’s Ultrasonic Testing Multi-Channel (UT-MC) Ring—an industry-standard tool for pipeline inspections—had to be modified to navigate tight turns in both directions. Second, the pipeline lacked a dedicated launcher and receiver system, necessitating a custom-designed solution for smooth execution.

Dexon’s engineering team worked closely with the client to adapt the UT-MC Ring for bidirectional use. Typically optimized for one-way operations, the tool needed enhanced stability to reduce the risk of errors when navigating tight bends in both directions. To address this, Dexon employed a joint-free construction that improved the tool’s ability to remain centered during the inspection, minimizing the risk of it becoming stuck.

Key features of the UT-MC Ring included:
  • Compact design with integrated electronics, hard drives, and transducers, reducing the tool’s footprint.
  • Joint-free construction, enhancing its ability to navigate sharp pipeline turns without risk of obstruction.
  • High-precision corrosion detection, capable of measuring metal loss with ±0.3mm accuracy.
  • Compliance with POF 2021 standards, ensuring industry-leading inspection quality and reporting.
Custom Launcher for Seamless Inspection

One of the most complex aspects of the project was the absence of a standard launcher and receiver at the sea berth. To mitigate this, Dexon’s engineering team designed a bespoke launcher tailored to the pipeline’s specifications. This custom launcher, designed in coordination with the operator’s infrastructure plans, was installed onshore, allowing for efficient pipeline inspection without interrupting petroleum flow.

The custom setup eliminated the need for an expensive receiver installation at the sea berth, significantly reducing both costs and operational disruption. Moreover, Dexon provided the launcher design to the operator at no additional charge, demonstrating the company’s commitment to customer-centric solutions.

Successful Execution and Results

Despite the technical complexities, Dexon completed the inspection with remarkable efficiency. Following an initial cleaning and assessment, the customized UT-MC Ring finished the full bidirectional inspection in just over two hours. The data was then thoroughly analyzed by Dexon’s specialists, who confirmed that the results met the highest industry standards for accuracy and reliability.

This project exemplifies Dexon’s expertise in delivering tailored inspection solutions that address the unique challenges of subsea pipelines. By combining customized technology with innovative engineering services, the company was able to reduce downtime, maintain high-quality data integrity, and keep overall costs under control.
