The Honda Foundation has awarded the prestigious 45th Honda Prize to Dr. James G. Fujimoto, Elihu Thomson Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, for his groundbreaking contributions to Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
OCT, developed by Dr. Fujimoto and his team, enables non-destructive, cross-sectional imaging of tissues, revolutionizing ophthalmology and finding applications in cardiology, disease detection, and industrial testing.
“It is a great honor to receive the Honda Prize,” said Dr. Fujimoto. “The continuation of my research has only been possible thanks to my colleagues and many supporters. I am delighted OCT has been commercialized and applied clinically, helping many people along the way.”
Hirohisa Uchida, Chairperson of the Honda Prize Selection Committee, noted: “Dr. Fujimoto’s achievements align perfectly with the philosophy of ‘making people happy with technology’ and the foundation’s commitment to ‘ecotechnology.’ OCT’s potential is limitless.”
Dr. Fujimoto delivered a commemorative lecture on "Optical Coherence Tomography: History, Evolution, and Future Prospects", detailing OCT’s impact and its future possibilities across medical and industrial fields.
The Honda Prize, established in 1980, recognizes individuals whose innovations contribute significantly to humanity.
