Apprenticeships continue to play a crucial role in developing the skilled workforce of tomorrow, providing hands-on experience, technical expertise, and career-building opportunities across industries. As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2025, the journey of Safaa Essalhi, a third-year Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) apprentice at Transport for London (TfL) and the 2024 IMechE Railway Division Apprentice of the Year, stands as a testament to the power of apprenticeships in shaping future engineers.

Making an Impact Through Engineering

Safaa’s passion for engineering stems from her deep desire to contribute to the city she loves—London. Understanding the pivotal role that TfL engineers play in maintaining one of the world’s busiest transport networks, she was determined to become part of the team ensuring seamless connectivity for millions of commuters. Beyond her technical aspirations, Safaa is committed to inspiring more women to pursue engineering as a fulfilling and impactful career path.

Her apprenticeship has provided her with an extensive education in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), arming her with expertise in ultrasonic, Eddy current, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing techniques. These skills enable her to assess and maintain vital vehicle and station assets, ensuring the safety and efficiency of London’s transport infrastructure.

Beyond technical training, Safaa has developed essential communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—key competencies required to thrive in the dynamic environment of London’s transport network. Reflecting on her journey, she shares:

"My journey as an apprentice with multiple placements has not only shaped my career but has also given me a deep appreciation for the incredible work that keeps London moving every day. I encourage all apprentices to embrace it. It's a great opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of something truly impactful."

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through her apprenticeship, Safaa was selected to speak at TfL’s Graduate, Intern, and Apprentice Corporate Induction, where she addressed an audience of over 300 attendees. Her leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to engineering excellence were further recognized when she was awarded IMechE’s Railway Apprentice of the Year 2024.

"Winning the Apprentice of the Year award is a great honour that motivates me to push my limits even further as a female engineer. This recognition fuels my passion for engineering and motivates me to continue uplifting those around me.

To all the women out there considering engineering as a career, I encourage you to take that leap. There are endless opportunities to innovate and make a difference."

The Value of Apprenticeships

Apprentices like Safaa are shaping the future of engineering, ensuring that industries continue to evolve with skilled, driven, and innovative talent. As National Apprenticeship Week 2025 is celebrated, OnestopNDT encourages employers to invest in apprenticeships and support the next generation of engineers.

OnestopNDT extends heartfelt congratulations to Safaa Essalhi on her well-deserved recognition. Her passion, determination, and achievements serve as an inspiration for aspiring engineers and a testament to the invaluable role apprentices play in the industry’s future.
