Vietnam is advancing its efforts in nuclear energy by reinforcing international cooperation, particularly as the country moves forward with the revival of its Ninh Thuan nuclear power project. Ensuring nuclear security and safety remains a top priority as Vietnam seeks to harness atomic energy for scientific and industrial applications.

In 2025, the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VAEI), operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology, will intensify bilateral and multilateral collaboration with global partners. These efforts aim to drive scientific research and enhance the practical applications of atomic energy in the country.

VAEI Director Tran Chi Thanh outlined key initiatives, stating, "Key initiatives include finalising technical cooperation projects with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and enhancing non-destructive testing (NDT) capabilities in Vietnam."

The institute is also committed to strengthening its engagement in the Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development, and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology for Asia and the Pacific (RCA). Collaboration with the RCA Regional Office is expected to deepen nuclear science and technology ties between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK). Additionally, as the national coordinator for the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA), VAEI oversees nine FNCA projects, including six focused on radiation technology, research reactors, and nuclear safety.

Vietnam's cooperation with Russia continues to play a crucial role in nuclear technology development. Key initiatives include the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Centre project and discussions regarding Vietnam’s participation in the Multipurpose Fast Neutron Research Reactor (MBIR) project. Other cooperative efforts focus on nuclear power development, investment in high-tech applications such as irradiation and mineral processing, and securing additional fuel for the Da Lat nuclear research reactor.

Looking ahead to 2025, VAEI plans to expand collaboration with Japan, the United States, India, and the Republic of Korea across various nuclear energy projects. These partnerships are expected to further enhance Vietnam’s capabilities in nuclear science and its broader applications across multiple industries.
