Stockelsdorf/Germany, May 21, 2024. VisiConsult X-ray Systems & Solutions with its VCbattery arm receives a grant of 1.1 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) from the state government of Schleswig-Holstein for its cutting-edge project "Battery Inspection Portfolio Inline" (BIP Inline). The BIP Inline project aims to develop X-ray-based computed tomography (CT) systems and solutions that enable the non-destructive testing (NDT) of typical battery cell types directly within line production at the end of assembly.
Cell assembly comprises all process steps for the production of a battery cell, from the anode and cathode foils from electrode production to the (partial) sealing of the battery cell housing. Inline inspection systems are already in use for the first, optically exposed steps, e.g. optical image recognition.
Quality control after assembly and before finalization is problematic, namely when the anode and cathode material – often together with the electrolytes – is in the closed housing. To date, there has been no precise and fast NDT solution for this, as optical methods are not effective here. The system-integrated, CT inline inspection portfolio from VCbattery by VisiConsult will therefore close a critical gap in the battery cell production process.
Specifically, the BIP inline funding project aims to systematically further develop the VCbattery by VisiConsult system portfolio in terms of inspection speeds, new defect detection requirements and new additional multimodal inspection approaches. This will enable maximum application benefits to be achieved for the battery industry and its entire value chain, i.e. for battery cells, modules and systems as well as for R&D, production, 2nd use and recycling.
The VCbattery systems are suitable for all cell types, i.e. cylindrical, pouched and prismatic. Today, VCbattery's second generation of CT inline cell inspection systems can already be used to inspect certain regions in pouched and prismatic cells extremely quickly during line production. And with the current third generation of systems, entire cylindrical cells can already be inspected 50 times faster than with other solutions. This makes these systems ideal for process control with the associated increase in yield rate.
Statements.
Claus Ruhe Madsen, Minister of Economics and Technology of Schleswig-Holstein: "This method revolutionizes the quality control of batteries because it enables manufacturers to detect and rectify faults at an early stage. This improves the quality and service life of batteries.“ With its commitment to R&D, VisiConsult is about to show how Schleswig-Holstein
is also developing into a high-tech battery location from within – through such hidden champions founded here, Madsen underlined.
Bernhard Mürkens, Head of VCbattery by VisiConsult: "Substantial process improvements made possible by the use of our CT Inline technologies can also contribute to massive cost savings in the design of a factory in order to achieve production targets. The reduction in the scrap rate also brings substantial cost savings in the manufacturing costs per cell. Last but not
least, it is also about sustainability, i.e. the longest possible battery life cycle, which should be achieved early on through quality inspection at all key milestones in the production process. Our CT inline technology is predestined for this."
Lennart Schulenburg, CEO and Co-shareholder of VisiConsult: "Battery manufacturers must already consider which technologies are available to them in their production processes when planning their production facilities. We are therefore extremely pleased that the state government of Schleswig-Holstein recognizes the urgency of ramping up cell production and is also supporting key technologies for quality testing in parallel with initiatives to locate production facilities."
Notes to editors.
The VCbattery by VisiConsult systems for 3D X-ray inspection are among the highest-speed systems on the market: The inspection of the prismatic cell for anode overhang - the most safety-relevant defect that can lead to "thermal runways" - is found at least 5 times faster than by the next best solution. Testing an entire round cell is at least 10 times faster. Previous 2D
solutions are currently being completely replaced in battery cell factories as a non-safe testing solution. Furthermore, the VCb systems test with a measurement accuracy that is at least three times better than that of the next best solution on the market (according to recognized automotive standards).
In addition, the DC, DM and DBS VCb system lines "powered by diondo" can now be used to inspect entire cells, modules and battery systems with high precision in the offline and at-line area. Diondo X-ray Systems & Services from Hattingen is the CT partner here and is now part of the VisiConsult Group. In addition, customized automation options from the company group provide support.
The BIP Inline project is financed with a funding rate of around 51 percent from the Schleswig-Holstein state program Economy 2021-2027 with funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The grant was awarded by WT.SH, Wirtschaftsförderung und Technologietransfer Schleswig-Holstein GmbH, on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs,
Transport, Labor, Technology and Tourism of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, in accordance with the grants for the promotion of operational innovations (BIF guideline).
