From Vision to Impact
In the dynamic world of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), few names resonate as powerfully as Marybeth Miceli. As the President & Founder of Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, Principal and Co-Founder of We-NDT Marketing Network and the Executive Director of NDTMA, Marybeth has been a formidable force in pushing the boundaries of technology and workforce development within the industry. With a career that spans over two decades, her journey is not just a testament to her own resilience but also to the potential of women in NDT.
Early Inspirations:
Marybeth's foray into NDT was almost serendipitous. "The day before I started at Johns Hopkins, I read about Dr. Robert Green's work on NDT of bridges. It was a moment of clarity," she recalls. Her passion for infrastructure and the role of NDT in its maintenance was ignited early and has been the driving force behind her career.
Journey in NDT:
Starting at age 18 in the labs at Hopkins, Marybeth's career has been marked by a series of pioneering roles. From conducting eddy current tests on bike cranks to undertaking acoustic microscopy of vehicle armor, her early experiences laid a solid foundation. Her work at Ground Zero and on numerous bridges in NYC and NJ are particularly notable. "Each project was a learning curve, pushing me to explore the uncharted territories of NDT," she shares.
Challenges and Triumphs:
Being a woman in a predominantly male industry was fraught with challenges. "When I started, the lack of female representation was palpable. But I never let that deter me," Marybeth states. Her determination to contribute and effect change in the industry often through volunteerism, has been instrumental in her success.
Mentorship and Leadership:
Mentorship has played a crucial role in Marybeth's career. Despite the initial scarcity of mentors, her persistence paid off, leading to meaningful relationships that have guided her. "Losing two of my mentors recently was hard, but the lessons they taught me remain invaluable," she reflects. Marybeth is now a mentor herself, focusing on supporting working moms in NDT and advocating for diversity and inclusion.
The Future of Women in NDT:
Marybeth is optimistic about the future of women in NDT. "The industry is evolving, with more women taking on leadership roles," she observes. Her work, particularly with the Women in NDT groups and the nationwide apprenticeship program, aims to open doors for more women and diversify the field.
Words of Wisdom:
To those aspiring to join the NDT industry, Marybeth offers this advice: "Keep going. Embrace every challenge and opportunity. Find a mentor and volunteer. These experiences not only enrich your career but also shape you as a leader."

Her impact on the NDT industry is indelible, inspiring a new generation of women to break barriers and build a more inclusive future.
